AGL FTP Server at the Geosciences
Department – University
of Houston
Note: Access to this
server is restricted and monitored.
How do I use this server? (If you are a AGL user, have a real account on
this server)
If you want to send someone
a file
If
you want to merely send someone a file, COPY your file to the 'outgoing' folder in the /www/ftp/
folder and then inform the person that the file is ready to be transferred (you
can also create folders in this directory), he/she will then be able to pick up
the file in two ways,
- By doing an
anonymous FTP to top-gun.agl.uh.edu and picking up the file from the
“outgoing” folder.
- By accessing
http://top-gun.agl.uh.edu/ftp/outgoing/
and transferring their files.
If
you want to send someone a file but want to secure the directory, then access
/www/http/htdocs/secure , create your directory there, make sure you make it
world readable/writeable with the command “chmod 777 directory name”, then send
an email to Michael Welch (mpwelch@uh.edu) specifying
the directory you want protected and the userid/password you want to assign to
the protected directory (you can specify multiple userids/passwords).
After
that, you can inform the remote user that they can pick up the file from http://top-gun.agl.uh.edu/secure ,
make sure you provide them the userid and password for adequate access.
If someone has sent you a
file and you want to access it
- cd to
/www/ftp/incoming and search for the file/folder which the user sent you,
usually after someone transfers you a file they will inform you the
transfer has been done and also the name(s) of the file(s).
- If they have
a userid/password to upload files DIRECTLY
to a specific directory under the “secure” folder, the do a cd to
/www/http/htdocs/secure/folder_name and search for the file
How do I use this server? (If you are an outside user and want to either
send or obtain files from this server)
If you want to obtain files
from this server, you have 2 places to search for
- Either do
any anonymous FTP (using your favorite FTP software) to top-gun.agl.uh.edu
or access via a web browser http://top-gun.agl.uh.edu/ftp/outgoing
- If your
files are in a secure area access http://top-gun.agl.uh.edu/secure
(you need to have a valid userid and password before hand)
TIP: To download multiple files (in 100s)
read http://support.geosc.uh.edu/docs/ftp_multi.htm
If you want to send files
to an AGL member, then you
- Do an
anonymous ftp to top-gun.agl.uh.edu and cd to the “incoming” directory and
drop your files there. For security
reasons you will not be able to list the contents of this directory.
After you transfer the files, please send an email to the appropriate AGL
member indicating the transfer.
- If you have
a userid/password to upload files DIRECTLY
to a specific directory under the “secure” folder, then use this link http://top-gun.agl.uh.edu/cgi-bin/upload.cgi
NOTE:
In any case it is
the responsibility of the AGL member to delete the files once the transfer is
over. Please keep the incoming/outgoing directories clean.
